3/20/10: Correction to final grades post:

Last night a correction was made to the final grades based on a spreadsheet error made by the TA. This is not a change in the grading policy or the grading scale, so you should only contact us if you think there was an error made in computing your grade. DO NOT CONTACT US OR COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR GRADE ONLY BECAUSE YOUR GRADE CHANGED SINCE THE LAST GRADE SHEET WAS POSTED. That grade sheet was wrong. You will receive a grade based on your quiz and final scores. Remember, to compute your grade you should first compute the percentage on each quiz (all quizzes were out of 25 points except quizzes 5 and 6 which were out of 20) and then take the 6 highest percentages out of your 8 quiz scores. The average of these 6 quizzes makes up 60% of your grade. The other 40% comes from your final grade, which was out of 75. Overall percentage = .6 * (Best six quiz percentage average) + .4 * (Final percentage).

3/12/10: A message from the Prof. regarding the final and grades

For the Final you will need to know how to do integrals of functions like
Sin2(kx); Cos2 (kx); and these functions multiplied by x, x2, etc.
These integrals can be solved by integrating by parts.

Course letter grade will be determined by:

A >= 70%; 50% <= B < 70% ; 30% <=C <50% ; D <30%

3/10/10: Check course handouts for Final Formulae. Also, a message from Prof. Sinha:

I have been asked by CAPE to remind all PHY 2D students to fill out the
online evaluation form. For this purpose you should have received an email
from CAPE. Please check your email

2/25/10: Another message from Prof. Sinha:

To clear up any
possible confusion from what I said at the end of the last lecture, please
read this comment on Reflection and Transmission at a potential barrier (in the handouts section)

2/24/10: A message from Prof. Sinha:

"Quiz 7 will involve from Chapter 6: Particle trapped in a one
-dimensional box with infinite potential walls; the simple harmonic
oscillator; and from Chapter 7 : quantum tunneling, reflection and
transmission at barriers of different types.

Practice assigned homework problems plus others from the book, if you can.

1/14/10: Prof. Sinha has released a supplementary formulae sheet for Quiz 1. Please see the handouts section.

1/13/10: The formulae that you will be given during Quiz 1 have been posted in the handouts section. Prof. Sinha has decided to allow graphing calculators on the quizzes, so feel free to bring any calculator that you like, but you still can't use the calculator on your phone or your computer. Check the batteries of your calculator, bring a blue book and make sure you have plenty of pencils and erasers when you come to the quiz. We will not provide any of these under any circumstances.

1/13/10: There was a slight correction to the solution of one of the Chapter 1 homework problems. Check the homework solutions page.

The first set of lecture 2 notes that were posted contained an error in the placement of gamma in the slide discussion relativistic length contraction. Please make a note of the difference on the new slides that are now available on the website.

Check out the new schedule on the main page - discussion/problem session has moved to Thursdays from 5:00-6:20 pm in 105 Center Hall.

Prof. Sinha has decided to CANCEL THE QUIZ THIS FRIDAY (1/8). There will be a lecture during that time instead. Nick will still be holding discussion tonight (Wednesday 1/6) at 6:00-6:50 pm in York 2622.
